Fracture of the patella
In this case a fracture of the patella is shown. It is a transverse fracture and extension of the leg is not possible anymore, necessitating an operation (1,2).
The fracture is approached through a transverse incision, the wound is cleansed and with a special device reposition is achieved (3-5).
Two metal pins are drilled through the fractureparts and an iron wire is applied around the pins using a hollow needle (6-11).
The wire is tied and compression in the fracture is achieved. The pins are bend and cut and driven into the tissue with a hammer (12-15).
The operation is completed and the skin is closed with staples. A bandage is applied. Weight bearing is permitted and by moving the kneejoint the fractureparts will be adjusted even more (16-18).
The position of the joint surface is allright, being the most important goal of the operation. The gap will close in time.
