Umbilical cyst

As a remnant of the fetal connection between the bladder and the umbilicus the urachus cyst can be mentioned. This can remain unnoticed or as a swelling (1) especially when an infection occurs as in this example, leading to pain and production of pus in the umbilicus (2).
Through a large incision the infectious area is approached. The cyst is opened and the contents are removed (3,4).
The wall of the cyst and the inflamed area around it are removed. Then the defect is closed again (5,6). Despite the fact that the wound is not closed tight (too high a risk of infection), the wound heals properly (7).
