Laparoscopy
A laparoscope permits examination of the inside of the abdomen. With some extra ports it is also possible to perform operations. The location of the ports depends on the sort of disease that has to be treated. In this example an inflamed appendix will be removed.
In 1 is the operating team. In 2 CO2 is insufflated in the abdomen and then a hollow tube, troicart, is introduced in the abdomen(3) at the level of the umbilicus. Then an optical device(4) is introduced with on top of it a camera attached. On the monitor the surgeon can see what he is doing. In 5 extra troicarts are introduced. After the operation only a few small openings remain that are sutured intracutaneously. Steristrips are applied that may be removed after about 10 days.
