Cleavage of the earlobe
![]()
A cleavage of the earlobe is nearly always caused by a too heavy earring making the hole larger and larger to eventually end in a total tear / cleavage. Also ofcourse, trauma with the earring can cause a tear.
Image 1 shows an example of total cleavage. Local anaesthesia in the ear has already been applied. Because the cleavageplane is covered with normal skin this will not adhere. It is thus necessary to cut away the skin (2,3,4) so that afterwards suturing can be done and healing will take place. On photograph 6 the result is seen after approximately 6 weeks.
Inserting new earrings is possible after approximately three months.
