Ganglion

A ganglion is a benign cyst, filled with a jelly like substance. It originates from the capsule of the joint or from a tendonsheath. It is mostly seen at the wrist, but it can also be found elsewhere in the body.

It can be treated by puncturing and aspiration and injecting a medicine that prevents a recurrence, but it can also be operated. All treatments have recurrences, the operative one the fewest, but the case described here proves that an operation is not a garantee for everlasting success since this patiënt was operated on before two times...

After opening of the skin the ganglion is freed from its surroundings with a knife.

The connection with the joint is searched for and is removed together with the adjacent part of the capsule of the joint and the ganglion. In this way proper healing can be expected.

The skin is sutured with resorbable sutures intracutaneously. The wrinkles disapear after resolution of the sutures in two or three months.
