Short frenulum linguae
![]()
A too short frenulum linguae is mostly congenital and can give problems with feeding of the newborn. Cutting with scissors will solve the problem. This can easily be done without anesthesia in this relatively bloodless area. When it is diagnosed in older age the treatment is the same, but then local anesthesia can be given. When the situation is due to scarring, it may be necessary to perform a plasty to prevent scarring again.

In this example a boy is shown in whom the tip of the tongue is fixed to the floor of the mouth due to the short frenulum linguae. After cutting the frenulum with hardly any bloodloss, the tongue can move freely.
