External fixation for a fracture of the wrist

This picture shows an inacceptable position after reposition. The reasons can be found in the complexity of the fracture and in the osteoporosis. A possibility to achieve a better position is an operation with external fixation.

In general or regional anesthesia the wrist is operated on. Metal pins and rods and devices are used.

Through tiny incisions the pins are drilled in the radius and the metacarpal bone of the indexfinger. Connecting rods are applied under tension to make a stronger construction that will last longer in the bone. A single drilled pin will loosen sooner. Then a longer connecting rod is applied, repostion is achieved and the long rod is fixed.

The pins are shortened and protective tips are applied.

In the aftertreatment a cast is not necessary. The material must be left in place at least for four weeks.
