Fibroadenoma in the breast

One of the benign deviations in the breast is the fibroadenoma . This is a combination of gland - and fibrous tissue which forms a more or less rounded tumor within the breast. It is an innocent disorder, that frequently occurs at younger age.  As by means of physical research, mammography, ultrasound and tissue research (puncture) the diagnosis is made, one can choose to leave the fibroadenoma  in place (and control it for some time) or to remove it. Removing always means a cicatrice and fibroadenoma’s can return in other places . Sometimes they can become so large that they become marring (giant fibroadenoma). In the example mentioned below there is a large number of fibroadenoma’s, not too large, but visible. On request of the patient the decision was made to remove some of them.

On photograph 1 a number of fibroadenoma’s is clearly seen. Also above the areola fibroadenoma’s can be palpated. Excision by means of two small small incisions is performed (2). On photograph 3 the fibroadenoma is seen well. It is freed (4) and  removed. The same goes for the areola area (5).

Several fibroadenoma’s are removed by means of these incisions (6). Hereafter the wonds are closed subcutaneously with soluble sutures and are covered with little plasters which can be removede after 7-10 days. The day after the intervention,  that takes place under general anaesthesia,  showering is permitted.
