Exostosis back of hand
A tumor on the dorsal side of the hand as in picture 1 and 2 is often caused by a so called ganglion. This is a protrusion of the joint capsule of the wrist that contains thickened joint (synovial) fluid. However, it can also be caused by a bony protrusion as in this case, a so called exostosis. It can give complaints by pressure on the surrounding tissue, nerves and / or tendons. Removal with a wedge of the underlying bone is the treatment.
Through a little incision the skin is opened and the tendons are kept aside. With a chisel the exostosis, including a wedge of bone, is removed (3,4,5).
After this the tendon can be clearly seen (6). Suturing is done subcutaneously and plasters are applied (7,8).
