Coccydynia
(painfull tailbone)
Coccydynia is a
condition of a painfull tailbone. The cause of the pain is not clear most of the
time, sometimes a trauma can be the cause. An x-ray does'nt have to show
abnormalities and the treatment (rules for lifestyle, injection with
corticosteroids or seldom surgery) depends on the severity of the complaints.
The results of all treatment modalities can be disappointing!

Nevertheless, in selected cases surgery may be a solution. In the following a deformed tailbone is removed and the procedure is shown.
In 1 the planned incision is shown as well as the coccyx. The patiënt is in prone position (face down) and the coccyx is freed from its surroundings (2-4). With a chisel the bone is cut and futher freed and removed (5-7).
After removing the coccyx the wound is closed with absorbable sutures for the deep layers (8-10). Local anesthetics are given to reduce the immediate postopertive pain and then the skin is closed (11-13). Showering is permitted. Sitting will not be pleasant for some time...
