Carbunkel

An abcess arises when an infection in the tissues gets out of hand  and the natural defense of the body is not able to fight the penetrated  bacteria sufficiently. Once an abcess has formed, antibiotics will no longer help and surgical intervention is mandatory:

'ibi pus, ibi evacua' - or: where there's pus it must be removed

In the following is an example of a carbunkel, which is a collecton of furunkels. A furunkel is an acute inflammation of the hairimplant, combined with tissue necrosis. It is caused by an infection, mostly stafylococcus aureus, sometimes s. epidermidis. If the infection is deeper en bigger, a carbunkel arises. The treatment consists of local hygienic measures, antibiotics and if necessary drainage and removal of necrotic tissue.

In picture 1 the large carbunkel can be seen with several pus locations and a large infiltrated area around it. With a spray the skin can be frozen and anesthesised and then an incision is placed for drainage. A gauze is left in the wound to make sure the wound stays open for future drainage in the days to come. Frequent cleansing will eventually lead to healing.
