Sebaceous gland / cyst

An obstructed sebaceous gland (atheromacyst) can occur everywhere where these glands are, therefore almost everywhere on the skin. Mostly they can be found on the more hairy body parts. The gland  is necessary to lubricate the skin and to keep it smooth but if the gland is obstructed ik keeps producing and tumours arise with sizes  from some millimeters up to more than 10 centimetres! It is in itself innocent, but frequently annoying and it is also possible that they get inflamed sometimes with  a very painful abcess for which a surgical intervention is necessary. Don’t try to squeeze them out!!

After a local anaesthesia

the cyst is freed from its surroundings and removed in one part (preferably).  The contents are variable in consistency, sometimes aqueous, generally thick. The fragrance is very unpleasant and characteristic.
