For several reasons it may be necessary to perform a colostomy. The procedure is shown in several steps.
As can be seen in the first picture this patient was operated upon before. The scar is opened again and after freeing of the targetpart of the colon (large bowel) and cutting it between two rows of staples, a round piece of skin is cut away in the future stoma site (2,3,4)
Through this hole the abdominal cavity is approached en with a clamp (5) the freed colon is grasped (6,7).
Then the clamp with the gut is pulled out through the hole and fixed with sutures to the fascia of the muscles (8,9,10).
The staplerow is removed with scissors and then the stoma is sutured to the skin (11,12,13)
A special material is fixed on to the skin and a plastic bag is applied to it to collect the stools (14,15).
