Polyp in the anus

Skintags

Polyp in the anus

Generally the complaints of patients concerning irritation around the anus rely on piles. Sometimes however a polyp in the anus is the cause. It can even spontaneously protrude outside the anus (1). Generally the polyps are in the anal canal (the last part of the rectum) and not visible. They frequently come outside for example during evacuation and then they may have to be  pushed back manually.  The polyps may give irritation and also complaints of  hygiene.

Operation as in the example below, can be done under local anaesthesia (1-5). For cutting an electric knife (3) is used to seal the many little vessels in this area (4).

In 6-7 general anesthesia is used, due to the size and deeper location of the polyp.

Skintags

Skintags are pieces of residual skin or scarred hemorrhoids. They can give hygienic complaints, itching or soiling. Surgery gives good results, but the anal region is very sensitive and therefore pain can be very annoying for about three weeks after surgery. However, in the end the result is very satisfying to most patients.

Surgery is performed in general or in regional anesthesia because often several skintags will be removed. In this case excision is done with an electric knife to cause as less bleeding as possible. The resulting wounds are left open, because suturing would give to much tension on the tissue and therefore more pain. Besides this, closing a wound in this infectionprone area would be an invitation to infection.

After surgery  local anesthesia is given to ensure  painless recovery for about 6 hours. After this period rest is important and oral painkillers can be taken if needed.
