Amputation of the big toe
![]()
The patient in this example has an infection of his big toe. This causes swelling (1). An x-ray shows involvement of the bone, meaning that the infection has also invaded the bone (2). This can hardly be treated by antibiotics, especially when diabetes is involved, as in this patient. Then a rigoreus treatment is almost always inevitable to prevent further spreading of the infection.
After several days of treatment with antibiotics amputation is performed. The incisionline is marked and then the skin, tendons and joint capsule are cut and the toe is removed. The metatarsal bone is partially removed in order to make sure there is no tension in the tissues when the wound is closed(3-7).
Then the wound is closed. After healing special shoes will have to be provided (8-11).
